Nature in Le Marche

Beaches

The coast of Le Marche, located on the Adriatic Sea, is characterized by predominantly wide sandy beaches. In some places you will find beautiful bays, such as north of Pesaro and of course at Numana and Sirolo at the Riviera del Conero. Le Marche has one of the largest numbers of 'clean' beaches, recognizable by the blue flag, 'bandiera blu'

The Adriatic coast has a relaxed character in Le Marche. You will not find big discos and 'wild' nightlife here. The main part is 'Italian', ie rent umbrellas and sunbeds. The advantage is that it is clean, there is a lifeguard and that there are usually a bar, toilets and showers. Visitors are mostly local Italians, which creates a cozy (and sometimes noisy) atmosphere. There is a lot of chatter, telephoning and reading newspapers. Italians go to the beach early and go home for lunch at noon. When you arrive at 12:00 you sometimes look at them a bit strange. Crazy foreigners who go to the beach in the heat of the day ...

In any case, please report to the 'bagnino', recognizable by a very tanned man with sunglasses under a parasol, who will then take you to a 'free' spot. If you come during the afternoon, you can usually get a substantial discount. Folded umbrellas are usually those that are still available. If you do not want an umbrella and / or lounger, look for the free beach on 'spiaggia libera', usually at the end of the umbrella zone and often also centrally located in the beach area. Here you can just spread your towel and it is sometimes a bit quieter.

Natural pools

In addition to the beaches, Le Marche also offers opportunities for cooling inland. You will find natural 'swimming pools' in various places. Places in rivers where you can swim and play. Because it can still be busy on the beach in the summer - especially on weekends - a nice alternative and less busy. Moreover, you are also in a beautiful environment!

The 'pools' of the Auro

Between Borgo Pace and Parchiule you will find several natural pools that are very suitable for swimming.

The water is pleasantly warm, especially in the months of July and August, because the bed is rocky and the water is quite flat. This way the water heats up quickly, but because it is flowing it stays nice and fresh.

The pools at Cagli

Near Cagli, towards Cantiano / Gubbio, the river flows through a gorge with several waterfalls and pools. Here you can even jump and dive from the rocks (take a look where the 'classrooms' do this). Beautiful clear water. How to reach? Follow the main road from Cagli towards Gubbio. After about 2 km, after coming out of the tunnel, turn off at the restaurant. Drive back a short distance and descend to the river.

Gola di Furlo

Just west of Fossombrone you will find the Gola di Furlo. A gorge that served as a connecting road for the Romans in ancient times (remains can still be seen underwater).
Here you will find large gravel beaches along the river where life is good. Especially when it is warm, a must, because of the gap there is almost always a nice breeze. Also widely used by Italians for picnics, nice atmosphere.

From Fossombrone follow the 'superstrada' direction Rome. After the tunnel, turn immediately (ri gola di furlo) and drive into the gorge. After about 2 km you will see a large parking lot on the right.

Lago di Fiastra

In the south of Le Marche, the inland Fiastra is a real crowd puller. Here you can swim, sail and much more. And of course with a view of Monte Sibillini.
Especially when the coast is sometimes a bit far, this is a wonderful alternative to a day at the beach.

Caves of Frasassi

It is a short distance away, but then you really have a location that is worthwhile. One of Le Marche's showpieces is the Grotte di Frasassi. This is one of the largest and most beautiful cave systems in Europe. Size with small stalactites and stalagmites vie for your attention. In the huge rooms, all you hear is the constant, comforting sound of falling water drops. There are guided tours which are led by a guide in Italian, French, English or German. A 1.5 km route has been plotted over wide walking paths and spacious stairs. In addition to this route, there are routes for the more advanced on less easily accessible paths.

The Monte Sibillini mountains

Monte Sibillini is located in the southwest of the region. In the summer, the snow-capped peaks make for a nice walking area, where you can be ambushed by large herds of sheep, and in winter, the long slats can be tied under. The highest peak Monte Vettore (2,476m) towers high above this national park. The Piano Grande is located in the middle of the mountain peaks. Literally; the great plain. It is an impressive sight, especially in spring when the plain is colored by the thousands of flowers.
